A city conceived after siege

UNESCO places Valletta's foundation in 1566 after the Great Siege of 1565. The Knights of St John planned a fortified city on a peninsula between two natural harbours, using a regular street grid within bastioned walls. This combination is essential to its character. The city is not simply a collection of important buildings: streets, topography, defences and maritime edges belong to a planned relationship.

From bastions into the city

Valletta's local council records the commencement of work in March 1566, beginning with the bastions and then the principal buildings. It identifies Francesco Laparelli's contribution to the plan. Read from the Grand Harbour side, the city presents a constructed edge above the water; inside, the grid gives another experience of the same terrain. The chronology helps connect the monumental view with the practical sequence of building a new capital.

De kust en haar omgeving lezen

Read the Grand Harbour as a shared space rather than as Valletta's private foreground. The water creates relationships between several shores, while the capital's elevated edge offers one particularly strong viewpoint. Move from that wide panorama into the city and notice how the ground continues to influence the streets. The contrast between a regular plan and a steep peninsula gives the place much of its architectural energy.

Begin with a public Grand Harbour viewpoint and continue into Valletta's streets. If you add a ferry crossing or harbour excursion, verify the current route and operator arrangements separately. Check individual monument access and allow for slopes and steps; a viewpoint can introduce the whole landscape without requiring a demanding circuit of every waterfront level.
