Walls built in several periods
Saint-Malo's tourism authority traces the ramparts back to the twelfth century and describes rebuilding after the fire of 1661. Eighteenth-century extensions were directed by Garangeau, an engineer associated with Vauban. The circuit should therefore be read as a sequence of works rather than a single medieval enclosure. Its gates, bastions and changes of direction record the continuing relationship between an urban settlement, military construction and the sea.

The coast beyond the enclosure
The same authority places the Grand Bé and other offshore defensive sites within the wider setting of the walled city. They are distinct places, not simply extensions of a continuous promenade. The ramparts offer a way to understand that geography from the city itself: enclosed streets on one side and a coast changing with the tide on the other. Visiting an islet requires its own current local access information.

Die Küste und ihr Umfeld lesen
Take the view from above as an introduction, then return to street level. The wall separates and connects two experiences: the dense fabric of the town and the broad, changing tidal shore. Both belong in the account. Maritime identity is strongest here when it is read through thresholds, gates and working waterfronts, rather than reduced to privateering imagery. Weather and water can transform the apparent scale of the same defensive landscape within a few hours.

Make the rampart circuit your first orientation and choose a shorter section if exposed conditions make the full walk uncomfortable. Consult the tourist office before attempting any tidal-islet visit. Museum and monument access should be checked separately; the public city walk does not establish access inside every defensive structure.
