A commercial and artistic harbour
UNESCO describes medieval Kotor as an important commercial and artistic centre, with traditions of masonry and icon painting. The natural harbour and the town's buildings belong to the same story. Its World Heritage setting includes part of the surrounding bay, not only the streets inside the walls. The relationship between water, steep slopes and settlement is therefore central to the recognised landscape rather than merely a scenic frame around its monuments.

A landscape repaired after damage
The UNESCO account records serious damage during the earthquake of 1979 and the restoration of principal monuments and urban areas afterwards. The town's present appearance includes that work of repair. This is an important distinction when looking at apparently continuous historic fabric: survival can involve research, reconstruction and sustained maintenance. The bay's significance also depends on the relationship between settlements and their setting, which makes changes outside the town walls relevant.

De kust en haar omgeving lezen
Walk towards the walls from the waterfront and then turn back to the bay. The reversal reveals how much of Kotor's identity lies beyond the enclosure. The steep ground creates a strong sense of compression, but it also directs the eye between town and water. Read the monuments as part of an inhabited landscape with a history of damage and repair, rather than expecting an untouched medieval stage set.

Begin with the public waterfront and the lower town before deciding whether to attempt any steeper route. Consult current local access information for walls and monuments, allowing for heat and steps. Choose quieter streets where possible and remember that the historic centre is also a residential and working environment.
