Defending the entrance

Bonifacio's municipal account identifies the Bastion de l'Étendard as a Genoese construction dominating the harbour entrance. Destroyed and rebuilt in the sixteenth century, it was adapted to changing siege techniques. This gives the dramatic view a practical explanation. The upper town's position and its defensive works are related, but the masonry also records successive interventions rather than one untouched period of occupation.

A working quarter below

The harbour's heritage account places the limestone setting beside the history of the lower waterfront. It identifies Saint Erasmus as a district long associated with fishing and notes significant port works in 2012–2013. The modern marina and the upper citadel therefore belong to different but connected layers. Contemporary changes are part of the place's biography and should remain visible rather than disappearing behind a timeless image of cliffs and walls.

Unsere Lesart · Redaktionelle Einordnung

Die Küste und ihr Umfeld lesen

Read Bonifacio vertically. Begin with the water and the lower town, then consider how the upper settlement commands the same space. The contrast is more revealing than a view of the cliff alone: labour and arrival below, defensive control above. The narrowness of the port makes those relationships unusually concentrated. Changing viewpoints can help separate natural form from construction while showing how strongly each has influenced the other.

Walk the lower waterfront before choosing an upper-town heritage route. Check current bastion access and allow for steep streets and exposed viewpoints. Boat excursions provide another perspective but require confirmation with their actual operator. Treat the cliff edge as a viewing landscape from designated public places, rather than an invitation to seek an improvised photo position.
