A city at the head of the gulf
The Greek National Tourism Organisation places Nafplio at the head of the Argolic Gulf and identifies its naturally fortified setting. Bourtzi and Palamidi form two distinct points in that landscape. The harbour makes their relationship visible: a low island position on the water and a much higher fortified hill above the town. The contrast is a useful introduction to the city's maritime geography before examining individual monuments.

The hill as a defensive system
The national tourism account dates Palamidi to the early eighteenth century and identifies eight bastions designed to operate with a degree of independence. It records the fortress's place in the Greek capture of Nafplio in 1822. The complex is therefore more than a viewpoint. Its internal arrangement, the town below and the gulf beyond belong to a connected military landscape whose history crosses different periods of rule.

Use the waterfront first, allowing the two fortified positions to establish the shape of the place. A climb, if appropriate, can then turn that initial view around and reveal how the town sits below the hill. Neither perspective needs to replace the other. The interest lies in their relationship: a harbour town organised between water and height, where monumental views can lead into questions about control, movement and changing political circumstances.

Begin with an accessible waterfront walk and check current arrangements before adding Bourtzi or Palamidi. For the hill, consider road access as well as the stepped approach and make a choice suited to your mobility and the weather. Visit times and monument admission should come from the responsible local institutions.
