An iconic but specific landscape
Greece's national tourism authority locates Balos at the island's north-western end, between Gramvousa and Cape Tigani. It distinguishes this lagoon landscape from Elafonisi farther south. Keeping the two places separate matters for both photographs and visitor planning. The attraction is not a generic tropical-looking beach, but a particular arrangement of shallow water, pale shore and rocky ground within the western Cretan coast.

Arrival changes the experience
Crete's regional visitor account identifies approaches to Balos by land and boat, while the national description connects boat trips with Kissamos and Gramvousa. These are different itineraries rather than interchangeable ways to guarantee the same visit. The landscape's apparent openness does not remove practical limits. Current access, conservation instructions and the requirements of a particular service should determine the plan, instead of the assumptions suggested by a distant aerial view.

Give the structure of the lagoon time to emerge from the first impression of colour. Look for the transition between different areas of water and the relationship with the rock beyond. A view from above can establish the whole, while a closer encounter reveals how small and easily disturbed some transitions are. Balos is best appreciated through that change of scale, with restraint becoming part of the visit rather than an obstacle to it.
