Small coastal craft and the boatbuilding memory of Liguria

Small working boats on the beach at Laigueglia, Liguria. This is regional context; the file record does not identify each hull as a gozzo.

A small boat inside a large maritime story
The Galata museum guide in Genoa identifies Santa Caterina as a reconstructed sailing gozzo cornigiotto made by the Storie di Barche association. The guide places it among several historic small craft, including a regatta gozzo. These examples make room for local boat traditions within a museum otherwise able to tell much larger stories of shipping. They also show why a general name must be tied to a particular local form and purpose.

Regional memory beyond one collection
Camogli's municipal account of the Gio Bono Ferrari maritime museum describes a collection devoted to Ligurian maritime history, particularly the town's sailing tradition. It offers a complementary shore-based setting for reading boats, equipment and records together. A regional craft is not explained fully by a modern harbour photograph; its builders and users belong to a wider community whose evidence may survive in collections and archives.

Keeping local identities intact
Italy's cultural catalogue also records a gozzo from Cariati in Calabria, with its own maker and construction history. That record is used as a comparison, not as evidence for a Ligurian boat's dimensions or provenance. The shared word gozzo does not erase regional differences. Santa Caterina likewise needs to remain identified as a reconstruction, rather than being presented as an original working hull from an unspecified earlier century.

Lire le navire et son contexte
Look at the small craft before moving towards the grand ships. A local boat can reveal the relationship between a beach, a landing place and the skills available nearby. At a museum, ask why a particular example was chosen and what the reconstruction was intended to explain. This keeps the subject grounded in a coast and a community. It also avoids making every rounded wooden boat along the Mediterranean into the same object, with interchangeable dates, functions and picturesque associations.
